Xhosa Culture Tours

UBuntu Bridge, in an effort to bring the cultures of our country together and to provide income opportunities for poorer communities, presents you with the following two immersion and language learning opportunities. Both of these activities are designed to provide a safe and welcoming environment for learners to interact with Xhosa people in their own environment, building a real foundation of trust and promoting the quality of Ubuntu in South Africa.

Xhosa culture in today’s South Africa can be roughly divided into two main sectors – ezilalini (in the rural villages) and elokshini (in the location). Both are equally important and reflect the living conditions, cultural values and aspirations of the majority of Xhosa people.

Xhosa Village Experiences

This is more of an immersion experience, then a tour, as one lives with a family in a mud-hut homestead in a remote and beautiful coastal village in the rural Transkei for a period of up to 10 days. I facilitate the process from my mud-hut and conduct daily
language lessons with the learners. This option is already available in school holidays having been conducted successfully with school and corporate groups.

Township Volunteer Opportunities

To learn a language you need to hear it and speak it as often as possible. The Eastern Cape and the Village experiences we offer, although fantastic, are far away and time will only allow for such excursions occasionally.

Life is rushed in the city, so make some time to go interact with a community, bring some of your love and enthusiasm and wisdom/knowledge to communities in need. Its a great way to contribute to nation building and improve your Xhosa.

This programme is ideal for people wanting to connect with the urban Xhosa culture elokshini (in the location). It is a chance to overcome fears and to feel welcomed into a vibrant community, having fun and improving your Xhosa.
